Senkadagala heritage in book form

The beautiful city of Kandy encircled by Hanthana Hills, Bhairava Hills, Udawatta Jungle and the Dunumadala Forest, was named as a World Heritage by the UNESCO in 1988.

That is presently called Kandy. Between 1521 and 1815 Kandy remained a Kingdom ruled by successive nine monarchs. Study information on the Kandyan period is scarce. In such a backdrop, gathering and preserving historical information on the period will be resourceful to the future generation. Having identified this need, TH Indika de Silva delivered a lecture at Sudharmaramaya of Kandy. As an explorer and critic, he took the trouble to collect extant information about the kingdom of Kandy and authored a book. It is called the Grandeur of the Last Kingdom of Sinhalese Senkadagala Urumaya. It is based on information that he had collected from the folk legends and other sources.

He did so to pass on - at least to a certain extent - information to the future generation.

The book contains information on the period between Anuradhapura and Kotte Period, the origin and evolution of the Senkadagala Period, the services of Venerable Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thera who fought for the country and the Sacred Tooth Relic which received royal patronage and protection. The endeavours made by the author to promote patriotism through serious writing deserve appreciation.

In addition to the main topics, the reader is provided with a comprehensive idea of the past and present of the city, schedules, photographs and maps. The book is a publication of Minsara Publishing House, Gampaha. Titled Sinhale Awasan Rajadhahane Sri Vibuthiya, - Senkadagala Urumaya, the book is available at the leading bookshops.
