Navy celebrates 72nd Freedom Day

Marking Sri Lanka's 72nd Freedom Day, the Navy showcased a spectacle at the Galle Face Green under the patronage of its Commander, Vice-Admiral Piyal De Silva, yesterday.

The programme comprised of vessel and ship displays, mock life-saving operations, as well as

Angampora and other performances.

The display of paintings on 35 turtles shells (which had been killed by hunters) was an outstanding section in the show. Those shells had been found in Mannar on the same day, Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Isuru Suriyabandara said. Steps have also been taken by the Navy to enroll new personnel at the venue, yesterday. The Navy also accorded a 25-Gun Salute to the nation at the Lighthouse premises in Colombo Fort, at 12.00 noon, in line with the Independence Day celebrations.

Moreover, the Navy has declared a seven-day general amnesty for the Navy deserters from today.
