Varsity students briefly raise black flags

National ceremony at Jaffna Secretariat

Freedom Day events were conducted peacefully in Jaffna yesterday with the national flag raised at the District Secretariat and tree planting ceremonies in the city, reports said. Some students had briefly raised black flags at the main entrance of the Jaffna university yesterday with slogans highlighting ‘disappearance’ cases of the past. Military sources said that the University authorities had quickly intervened and the flags were brought down. During yesterday’s Freedom Day events, several areas of the Peninsula had been placed under tightened security to ensure normalcy, these sources said.

According to Jaffna sources: “Several banners with slogans had been put up at the university entrance as a solidarity action for the families of the disappeared persons. The protest was for those families seeking justice and still in search for the disappeared. Within minutes of the incident, the university authorities had requested for the banners to be removed”. Meanwhile, at the Jaffna district secretariat, when the national flag was hoisted for the official Freedom Day event, the national anthem was sung in both languages.

Tree saplings were planted at the historic Jaffna old park.
