NPC receives 1,651 public complaints in 2018

The National Police Commission (NPC) has received 1,651 complaints by the public against Police officers in the Public Complaint Investigation Division in the year 2018, according to the Police Commission report which was presented to Parliament last month.

Complaints classification according to the nature of the complaints in 2018 indicate that 40% of the complaints  received are inaction by the police officers. 30% of the complaints were on the abuse of power and another 15% received regarding partiality towards parties. There were three complaints received on Police officers harassing women and children and two public complaints against the Police for death in Police custody.

1,190 complaints have been investigated and relief provided to the public in keeping with the laws under the Constitution. Furthermore, steps have been taken to take disciplinary action against 69 Police officers upon the conclusion of investigations.

The National Police Commission report also states that there were immediate responses made to 1,408 Complaints/Inquiries received through Hot-Line number “1960” between April and December 31,2018.

The Mirihana, Panadura South, Kalmunai, Kattankudy, Matara, Ratnapura, Narammala Police stations had more than 10 complaints against them while the Polgahawela and Badulla Police stations received over 15 complaints and the Kandy, Batticaloa and Anuradhapura Police stations had over 20 complaints against them.
