MP Range Bandara requests President

‘Allow Defence Secy, IGP to appear before PCoI probing Easter attacks’

United National Party (UNP) MP Palitha Range Bandara yesterday requested President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to allow former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara to give evidence and present documents before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI)probing the Easter Sunday attacks.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sirikotha UNP office, the MP said the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks would come out if the duo were allowed to make their submissions without fear and doubt.

“It is not fair to keep them in remand prison without allowing their voice to be heard. I have always maintained the stance that former President Maithripala Sirisena was responsible for the loss of over 300 lives from the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks. Let the IGP and former Defence Secretary reveal how they were pressurized following the attacks not to reveal the truth. The justice could only be served by then,” he said.

MP Bandara, during the course of his speech, pulled no punches in accusing the former President of duplicity, disloyalty and backtracking on his policies.

“First he betrayed the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and then the UNP. He tried to destroy the UNP by cultivating close links with a few Ministers and MPs, also promising posts and favours to them. Now he has faced the ‘karma’ of his own acts. He now says that the SLFP would support the President to secure the two-thirds majority in Parliament. Saying so, he admits that he is weak.

He wants to enter Parliament as an MP from Polonnaruwa. Having ruthlessly criticized Rajapaksas a few years ago, he has no shame to go back to them and ask for nominations,” he charged.

He further accused the former President of claiming the ownership of Paget Road residence, stating that Rs. eight billion of public money was spent to develop it by connecting three residences.
