Return of Lankan students from China

Close ties with China expedited the process - Minister Wanniarachchi

China has maintained a strong and close friendship with Sri Lanka for centuries and on many occasions, the Chinese Government has ensured its assistance to Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan students in Wuhan were released in this background. That is how Sri Lanka became the fourth country to take their citizens out from Wuhan, Women and Child Affairs, Social Security, Health and Indigenous Medicine Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

Addressing a press conference at the Health Ministry Auditorium in Colombo yesterday, she said it was China which came forward and stood by Sri Lanka when the UN Security Council brought a proposal against the humanitarian operation which ended the 30-year-long armed conflict in the country. At the UN Security Council, China was the first country which said that ending the war in Sri Lanka was right.

According to Minister Wanniarachchi, China has the world’s strongest economy. China has provided many grants and loans at concessionary interest rates for Sri Lanka. “China is our friend and that friendship will remain forever. The two countries respect each other. We, Sri Lankans should never show discrimination to the Chinese in Sri Lanka. It should not be done on any grounds,” the Minister said.

“The students who arrived from Wuhan are in good health and they do not even have a headache. They stay in Diyatalawa happily. They do not have any symptom of Coronavirus infection. They will be sent to their homes after 14 days,” Minister Wanniarachchi added.
