‘UNP will not win an election for next 20 years’

There is no unity in the UNP. The leader of the UNP suspects the deputy leader and vice versa. With the continuing infighting for leadership, the UNP will not be able to gain power for the next 20 years, Environment, Wildlife, Land and Land Development Minister S.M. Chandrasena said.

He said that in the present political context, the SLPP could definitely obtain a two-thirds majority at the forthcoming general elections.

The Minister pointed out that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) founded by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was victorious at two consecutive elections - the Local Government and Presidential elections, politically sweeping away the UNP, JVP and other rivals.

Under the circumstances, the UNP would win only around 40 seats at the forthcoming general elections. There is also a strong possibility that some UNP stalwarts would join the SLPP once the general election is announced, Minister Chandrasena said.

“The UNP sheds crocodile tears that the government has been undemocratic whereas within the UNP itself democracy is not implemented. The UNP which utterly failed at the Presidential Election while in power is now daydreaming that they could form the next government with Sajith Premadasa as Prime Minister,” he said.

“There is no other path to usher the country into an era of prosperity than the vision and mission of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who is affiliated to the Pohottuwa and its alliance,” the Minister said.

“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has pointed out within a short period in power the direction in which the country could achieve prosperity.”
