Road modenisation programme to be launched

A programme to modernise the country's road network and pass on its benefits to the people will be launched soon, Highways Development State Minister Lohan Ratwatte said.

Under this programme, 100,000 kilometres of roadways will be developed and a new underground roadway will be built in Kandy to resolve the present vehicle congestion he said.

State Minister Ratwatte was addressing a meeting after launching several road development programmes in Kandy district on January 28.

These included the Wales Park Junction Development Scheme which sees the widening of the road from Bogambara Roundabout to William Gopallewa Mawatha junction as a three lane road and the building of the Pedestrian underground tunnel opposite the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital and several other projects.

He said under this programme, all roads in the district would be developed according a systematic plan and overhead bridges would be built opposite schools.

He said signal light networks would also be installed at vital junctions to ensure the safety of road users while steps would also be taken to expedite work on the Central Expressway as envisaged by the ‘vision of Prosperity and Splendour' National Policy Framework.

Ministry of Roads and Highways Secretary R.W.R. Pemasiri State Ministry Secretary K. W. T. N. Amaratunge, Road Development Authority Chairman Chaminda Athuluwage and Director General Kamal Amaraweera were also present on the occaison.
