‘Improve human resources in line with President’s vision’

Central Bank Governor Prof. W D Lakshman called on the general public to improve the human resources in line with the vision of the president so as to help with economic prosperity speaking at the BMICH yesterday at an Institute of Bankers Sri Lanka (IBSL) graduation ceremony.

Prof. Lakshman said, “As you prepare for your future career the whole country is getting ready for a new era of prosperity under new leadership. A new way of doing things.”

“The availability of human resources is a huge determinant of national prosperity. It also determines the financial success of the economy. The country needs financial professionals.”

He said the institution enjoyed a monopoly-like power over professional education in the field because of its ties to the Central Bank.

Prof. Lakshman added “Markets are the bedrock of sustainable and fair development.

It requires skilled human resources. The importance of human resources at the country level are being highlighted at the highest level of policymaking today.”

Prof. Lakshman said “Financial transactions are becoming the predominant force in global economics today. This promotes genuine human welfare but also is open to corruption through market manipulation for profit-making.”

He called on graduates to look into assisting lower socio-economic groups. He called on graduates to understand the political leanings of the country and foster a country with financial literacy, inclusion, and deepening.

He said, “This should all lead to a social equity objective thereby delivering economic empowerment.”

Central Bank Deputy Governor H. A. Karunaratne said “The banking and finance sector is important with all economic activities through financial intermediation. Having well-trained staff in the financial industry would help the financial stability and help mobility.”

Former Chairman IBSL K D Ranasinghe was given an honorary fellowship at the IBSL.

National Development Bank CEO P L D N Seneviratne, Bank of Ceylon General Manager W P R P H Fonseka, and Sampant Bank Assistant General Manager G K De Silva were given senior fellowships at the IBSL.
