Five suspects in Unawatuna murder case remanded

Galle Additional Magistrate Pavitra Sanjeewani Pathirana remanded the five suspects arrested by Habaraduwa Police in connection of the murder of woman hotelier of Yaddehimulla in Unawatuna, Galle till February 5.

Kankanmge Nilika Chamali Wilasitha (34) the owner of Mid-Town House restaurant in Unawatuna was shot dead at her hotel premises in front of her seven year child.

The suspects remanded are Kankanamge Lahiru Chanaka (30) of Thilakpura, Ambalangoda, Katuwawila Arachchilage Amith Niranjana (29) of Poonawatta, Dehiowita, Awissawella, Welithitage Danushka Suren (38) of Poramba, Ambalnagoda, Mantri Witana Dilshan Dananjaya (30) of Manimulla, Ambalangoda Watawala Kankanamge Irosh Ashan (31) of Galle Road, Induruwa

Police have found that the first suspect was a Special Task Force deserter and had been specially trained in VIP security and the fourth suspect had accepted the contract to kill the business woman.

The manna knife which had been used for the crime was found thrown in a canal in Ambalangoda and the weapon used for the shooting was found from the possession of a suspect. The motor cycle and the car used by the criminals to commit the crime were also found by police. They had rented the car from a renting firm.

The killers who arrived on a motorcycle at the restaurant at about 12.30pm on the day had dragged away the child from her lap and cut her neck after which shot her dead on the spot. Two employees of the restaurant had been at the cafeteria at the time of the crime and had run out of fear. The other three criminal accomplices had been waiting in the car.

From the investigations carried out so far it has been revealed that the murder had been done on a contract of Rs. 2.3 million to kill her by her husband who is employed overseas. Investigations further reveal that the alleged conspiring husband had paid the contract money in Euro currency out which Rs one million had been paid to the two criminals who killed the woman by cutting her neck and subsequently by shooting. The balance amount had been equally distributed among the other three suspects.

The victim was a resident of Atharagoda in Unawatuna had joined the tourism industry after her marriage.A separate contract for Rs. 3 million arranged also by her husband abroad had been reported to police a few months ago before the murder. Subsequently, a woman and a man were arrested on suspicion by Galle police in June last year.The case is pending at the Galle Magistrate’s Court.

Police investigations also reveal that the couple had been in dispute for sometime regarding the possession of the land and property where the restaurant was being operated.
