Ex-Zonal Education Director gets 10 years RI

A former Nikaweratiya Zonal Education Director who was found guilty for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.200,000 was sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment by the Colombo High Court. The accused Rohini Wasantha Kumarihami, was taken into custody by the Bribery Commission while accepting the bribe of Rs.200,000 from a teacher to secure the services of a trainee teacher working in a school in Nikaweratiya.

The case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendi and he also ordered the accused to pay a fine of Rs.20,000 and another Rs.200,000 as a penalty.

Delivering the verdict following a lengthy trial, the court declared that the charges levelled against the accused have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt and sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment.

The Bribery Commission had filed an indictment comprising four charges against the former Nikaweratiya Zonal Education Director for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.200,000 between June 1, 2016 and July 1, 2016.
