Kandy Sports Club completed a fantastic first round in the Dialog inter-club first round rugby league competition remaining unbeaten throughout with wins over Air Force SC 26-8, Navy SC 16-14, Army SC 64-19 all matches played at Nittawela, and against Police SC 34-13, CH & FC 31-13, CR & FC 27-21 and Havelock SC 22-12 in the matches played in Colombo. They have scored 34 tries, 23 goals, 6 penalties, and have 234 points against 106.
Kandy SC played as a well organized team and never squandered possession as they always endeavored to put it to good use. They played to a plan and pattern and every player knew his job and that is what separated them from the rest of the teams. There is no doubt that if Kandy SC continues in this form they will lift the league title for the 21st time.
Another factor in Kandy SC’s favor is that they have the right replacements for the job just in case players are injured.
The club has been the most successful Sri Lankan club rugby, winning 20 league titles in the last 25 years. Since 1994 they have won the league on 20 occasions which is the most by any club since the expanded competition commenced in 1950. Kandy SC has won the league title for a record nine consecutive years between 2000 and 2009.
Kandy came into this league tournament as the best prepared team. They put a lot of resource behind and have got a very strong set of players. They engineered a seven-game schedule over the past months, and got things perfect on the field.
At present Kandy is on top. The players who worked very hard throughout the first round, are sure to continue their good work, they have a great team this season. Many of the top players are from Kandy and Colombo schools. They learn the game at high level at school when they pick up a rugby ball for the first time.
In the second round they will kick off with the following fixtures: v Air Force SC at Ratmalana on Jan 25th Saturday, February 2nd Sunday vs CH & FC at Nittawela, 8th Saturday vs Army SC art Welisara, 15th Saturday vs Navy SC at Welisara, 23rd Sunday vs CR & FC at Nittawella, March 1st Sunday v Havelock SC at Nittawela, 8th Sunday v Police SC at Nittawela.
