Human - Animal conflict :Leopard in Yala Park poses threat

A leopard roaming in the fifth block of the Yala National Park, bordering the Buttala – Kataragama road, has put the lives of motorists plying on this road in danger.

Recently this leopard has attacked several motorcyclists who had narrow escapes.

According to residents of this area, fishermen who bring fish from the Kirinda Harbour to Buttala and Moneragala to be sold, throw the remaining fish into the jungle.

These leopards are used to come near the road to eat them. If they see an approaching vehicle, they try to attack them.

When inquired, Assistant Director of Wildlife Prasanna Wimaladasa said these animals are attracted to the main road due to the fact that they are being fed by fishermen.

“Several months ago, we were able to catch this kind of leopard who posed a threat to the people. So, we advise not to feed these wild animals as that may endanger your life as well,” he said.
