House to debate ‘Bond scam’ forensic report

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced that a parliamentary debate will be held into the controversial Central Bank Treasury Bond Scam forensic report after a decision made at the Party Leaders’ meeting.

He made this announcement considering requests made by government and opposition members. The Speaker said the forensic report will also be tabled in Parliament.

JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake demanded the chair to hold a two day debate on the report this week.

He said the people need to know what the former governments have done. Transport Service Management and Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the government too would like to debate the matter.

He added it a historic fraud. He said that it was pointless just to debate the matter but all culprits involved in the scam should be penalised.

UNP MP Ajith P. Perera said this matter is being heard before a Special High Court. Hence if the report is debated in the House,it would be supportive to the inquiries as well.

At this stage Community Development State Minister Nimal Lanza said that it was so important to debate this matter in Parliament and all the people should know about the ‘Foot Note’ group.

UNP MP Hesha Vithanage said that the government is reluctant to debate the forensic report.

House Leader and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that government needed to debate this matter as all the culprits are in the Opposition by now. He added that they committed this fraud while in power.

However when MP Anura Dissanayake queried as to when the Party Leaders’ meeting was to be held, Speaker Jayasuriya responded to say today (Tuesday). He added that he expected that the debate could be taken up this week as there are six sitting days for February.
