Certain politicians brought Judiciary into disrepute - PM

The actions of certain decadent political leaders has made a serious scar on the entire political field. People have lost faith in the honour and independence of the Judiciary due to the actions of certain members of the former regime, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a ceremony held at the Kalutara Sri Poorvarama Dharma Vijaya Pirivena on January 19.

The ceremony was held to mark the presentation of the Act of Appointment to Ven. Neluwe Sumanawansa Thera as the Chief Sanghanayake Thera of the Bentara Vihara Sector of the Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha of the Shyamopali Wansika Maha Nikaya.

Appreciating the opportunity he received to attend this ceremony, the Prime Minister said that according to the Nayake thera, the Sri Poorvarama Viharaya had been the abode of a powerful Bhikku who had been an ardent UNP supporter in the past. It was a prestigious temple with a 200 year old history. Once the Neluwe Sumanawansa Chief Sanghanayake Thera took over as Viharadhipati, he had added a Pirivena to it which provided education to a large number of Bhikkhu students. It was due to the services of erudite Bhikkhus that the Buddha Sasana had been preserved have and abroad.

The Prime Minister said people throughout the world looked towards Sri Lanka to learn Buddhism in its pristine and pure form. “Recently, I met a group a Thai Bhikkhus who had arrived have to learn Buddhism in depth,” the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister said anyone who logged onto Facebook could see the extent to which society had declined due to certain untoward incidents in the past. “This had happened because unsuitable persons had been allowed to enter politics. Leaders of the former Government from top to bottom should be held responsible for this sorry situation,” the Prime Minister said. “It was the duty of the Chief Justice to restore the lost prestige of the Judiciary,” the Prime Minister added. The Prime Minister said his son had to languish in remand jail for 46 days due to the political pressure exerted on certain judges by the previous regime.

“Several other Parliamentarians too had suffered a similar fate due to the excesses of the previous regime. This situation ought to be changed.

The present government would never interfere in or pressure the judiciary because it knew the gravity of such unjust actions,” Prime Minister Rajapaksa said. The Ven. Prof. Kotapitiye Rahula Anunayake Thera of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha presented the Act of Appointment to the Ven. Neluwe Sumanawansa Chief Sanghanayake thera while Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa presented the “Vijinipatha”. State Ministers Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Jayantha Samaraweera were among the others present.
