Tuition class roof collapse injures 15 children

Building in no condition for teaching classes

Fifteen children were injured following a roof collapse of a private tuition class in the Galagoda area of Meetiyagoda, Ambalangoda, yesterday.

Headquarter Inspector of the Ambalangoda Police Station Chief Inspector Indika Gamage told the Daily News that they have launched investigations following the incident concerning the holding of tuition classes in an unsafe building.

“The injured children were between ages six and seven. They were transported to the Balapitiya Hospital,” said CI Gamage.

“Eight children were hospitalized, but we learnt some of them were discharged from the hospital late in the evening after monitoring their condition,” he said.

“Luckily, none of the children had suffered life threatening injuries due to the collapse,” he said,

“The incident occurred at 3 pm. The tile clay roof of the rented tuition building apparently collapsed due to wear and tear of its truss system,” Police said. “The teacher was present was unharmed due to the collapse of the roof,” Police said.

Police said they were investigating the owner of the building, as it seemed that the building was not in a condition to be rented out for conducting classes and that the children could be compensated for the damage they had suffered due to the roof collapse.
