Swift measures to develop Wilpattu: Chandrasena

Environment and Wildlife Resources & Lands and Land Development Minister S.M. Chandrasena told the Daily News recently that swift measures are to be taken to develop the Wilpattu National Park in order to uplift the area’s tourism industry.

The minister said that infrastructural development and increased access would be one of the main focuses in this endeavour, which is to include extending the area of the park accessible to tourists, and also the opening of two entrances that have been closed for a long time. So far, only 2,500 acres of the park’s 3,500-acre area has been open to the public, he said, adding that the matter would be brought to the attention of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as well.

Furthermore, the minister said that measures would also be taken to increase the security in the area as many poachers, sand miners, and timber racketeers were active in the area.

He added that a comprehensive plan is to be implemented to protect nearly 300 archaeological sites in the sanctuary under the supervision of the Archaeology Department.
