Naturally intrigued by the rumours of a grand celebration, I too was interested in knowing and sharing my findings with my readers, so I made a beeline from office to meet and talk to the Air- conditioning Genius an undisputed authority in his chosen sphere of expertise guiding the the destiny of a “cool techie” empire.
Welcoming me with a warm broad grin, COOLTECH Engineering Services (Pvt) Limited’s Managing Director, DilrukNiranjanPerera started an hour-long dialogue, I felt was most interesting and inspiring,
Q. How challenging and memorable was your journey to excellence from the beginning?
A. On successfully concluding my secondary school carrier at Nalanda College, Colombo, I enrolled at the City & Guilds London for higher studies in air conditioning engineering, my pet pursuit. I completed the course with flying colours and furthered my education at Technical Training Institute (TTI), Katunayake under a traineeship. I thereafter underwent extensive and in-depth hands-on In-Plant training in Colombo Commercial Company (Pvt) Ltd and overseas establishments.
The training and experience led me to start my enterprise, Cooltech Engineering Services as a sole proprietorship in 1995. The birth of this substantial enterprise of today was a very humble outfit with just three employees. A small space in front of my house at Horetuduwa, Moratuwa served as our workshop and office with a handful of workers attending to all chores morning, noon and night. Before long, word spread like wildfire about our expertise and business started pouring in from all corners.
We soon became an easily recognizable service brand for the mastery of our trade especially in air conditioning and mechanical ventilation. We were branded for our skills and talent in AC services and refrigerator repairs. Through our reliable and punctual services, we gain uttermost customer satisfaction.
In 1997 we stumbled upon our first megaproject, the total AC installation as a sub-contractor at Royal Park Luxury Condominiums in Rajagiriya. Even before we concluded the project, orders were pouring in droves to have our presence felt in mega construction projects. The turn of events led the venture to be incorporated as a private limited liability company in 1999.
Q Humble at the beginning and now soaring higher and higher reaching dizzying heights, what are your views about the present?
A. Well, our employ strength swelled over time and we have an over hundred strong workforce comprised of professionally qualified and overseas and locally specialized engineers, technicians and a multitude of technologists manning every facet of our operations. We are an ISO 9001:2015 certified company who maintains international standards in our projects. Also, we are eligible to undertake AC projects to any magnitude or value as an EM 1 graded contractor under Construction Industry Development Authority (CIDA).
We are one of the authorized dealers for DAIKIN, world’s No. 1 Japanese air conditioning brand and an authorized dealer for LIANG CHI cooling towers of Thailand. STAR COOLTECH is a split type air conditioner especially manufactured and branded for us by China. It is our trademark registered under the Sri Lankan Government.
Our island-wide after-sales network covers any kind of repairs and installation work and engineering workshop is fully equipped with futuristic equipment capable of handling any job effortlessly. In our duct fabricating workshop, a sophisticated state of the art equipment produces duct mate flanges and joint accessories. I proudly announce that we are the only company to possess such equipment in the entire country.
Q. What are some landmark projects you have handled so far?
A. We have handled a wide range of projects throughout these 25 years, however, I will mention some remarkable projects to you. Starting from – total AC installation and mechanical ventilation system at the 30 storeysCrescat Monarch; chilled water AC system in the guest blocks of Shangri La Hotel in Hambanthota; split type AC system installation in 210 branches of the Peoples Bank and in 100 National Savings Bank branches; split type AC installations in island wide Ceylinco General Insurance branches; at David Peiris regional offices island-wide and nominated AC contractor for Ranna three-wheel assembly factory; split type AC installation in the University of Vocational Technology in Ratmalana and water-cooled package type AC system installation at PickMe Head Office in Nugegoda.
Q. We heard that your company has been invited to undertake a landmark hotel project invested by a Japanese firm in Sri Lanka. Can you explain the role played by your company?
A. It’s a sophisticated job by any yardstick and one that could be handled by a company like ours backed by a vast knowledge and experience in handling projects of this magnitude. We were entrusted with the responsibility of designing and installing air conditioning and ventilating systems for the Marine Drive Hotel Project coordinated by Hazama Ando Corporation of Japan which worth Rs 300 million. Our engineering team were privileged to design the air conditioning and ventilation system to International standards for 27 storey hotel project with 292 rooms, 3 restaurants and a penthouse. We specially imported DAIKIN chillers from Italy and Liang Chi cooling towers from Thailand for this project.
Q. Any other ongoing projects?
A. Of course. We are carrying out the design and installation of an air conditioning system for a 5 storey hospital project with 5 operating theatres, ICUs, Labour rooms, baby rooms, laboratories, patient rooms and public areas in Batticloa. East Lagoon hotel project in Batticloa; Muthumuni Ayurvedic Resort in Benthota; Unical pharmaceutical factory in Ratmalana; Sen-Saal Head office and main restaurant in Battaramulla etc.
Q. What are your plans?
A. Businesses, non-profits, and government agencies have come to rely on COOLTECH Engineering Services (Private) Limited to develop and implement approaches that yield results. Our innovative and performance-driven solutions have brought us national and local recognition for excellence, but more importantly, it has helped more than 2000 island-wide customers of ours address some of their most significant problems. Combining high standards, hard work, compassion for others, and best-in-their field professionals are at the heart of everything we do. For this reason, we plan to manufacture air conditioners in Sri Lanka, not only to make the local populace enjoy a high-quality product at affordable prices but also to win the world for us and to make our footprint felt firmly in overseas markets. We have plans to further develop the capacity in electrical installation and fire safety piping.
Q. What do you stand for?
A. Our cross-functional understanding of project management, research, training, and communications have helped Cooltech Engineering Services (Private) Limited to be at the core of best work practice across several industries.
