Nabbed for mining in Yala

Wildlife officers from Moneragala took into custody six suspects with gem mining equipment from the fourth zone of Yala National Park, last Wednesday.

The suspects were between 45 and 60 years of age and were residents of Okkampitiya and Hulandawa. They are to be prosecuted at the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court on January 24. A Wildlife officer told the media that they had allegedly destroyed the environment by digging large pits.

This raid was conducted by Arunasiri, Rupasingha of CSD and Wildlife officers Dumindu Kumara, Harsha Kumara, Gayan Nishantha, Ajith Kumara, and A.M.S.T. Bandara led by Wildlife ranger Jayasoma Ratnayake.
