Marketing of Yala paddy harvest discussed

The marketing facilities for the Yala paddy cultivators in the Batticaloa district who have harvested their crops were discussed at a meeting at the Batticaloa Kachcheri yesterday.

This is as per a directive from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Secretary to President, P.B. Jayasundara had instructed the Batticaloa Government Agent M. Uthayakumar to facilitate disposal of the paddy harvested in the Yala season. A reasonable price was to be paid through the Paddy Marketing Board for the purchase of this paddy.

The Batticaloa Government Agent said that the problems of storing the paddy were raised and a decision was made to store them in the nine available godowns. Six more warehouses are to be renovated. This season, nearly 60,459 hectares were cultivated and the warehouses in Polonnaruwa, Welikanda and Trincomalee are to be used to store the paddy.

More measures with regard to the Yala harvest are to be introduced on the directives of the President.

Additional Government Agent S. Sudharshini, Additional Government Agent (Land) Navarubaranjani Mugunthan, Assistant Commissioner Department of Agrarian Services K. Jagannath, District Deputy Director Department of Agricultural Extension J. Perinparaja, Army officers, Director of Planning Sasikala Punniyamoorthy and District Accountant K. Jegatheesan were present at the meeting.
