Garbage collection of four LG bodies in Galle halted

Following the conditional order issued by Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela restricting the transportation to and receiving of garbage at the Garbage Recycling Centre at Monroviyawatte, Panvila in Rathgama, Galle, garbage collection of four Local Government institutions has been temporarily halted.

Huge piles of garbage accumulated at all most all garbage collection locations under the above Local Government bodies can be seen everywhere causing immense hardship to the dwellers.

Commenting on the situation, Southern Province Deputy Commissioner of Local Government Nirupa P. Manage said that garbage collection had to be stopped for the time being due to an injunction issued by the court and they hoped to make submissions to the court regarding the present situation soon.

For over several years, the Rathgama, Hikkaduwa and Bope-Poddala Pradehsiya Sabhas and Galle Municipal Council have disposed of the waste collected within their respective areas to the recycling centre at Rathgama to which the people of the area were vehemently opposed.

Subsequently, the Rathgama Police following complaints made by the residents of the area submitted to the court that owing to the operation of the Garbage Recycling Centre, the regular activities of the people of the area were hampered due to a number of environmental issues caused by the project.

The police pointed out that a bad odour was being spread in the nearby regions, the well water of the area had become polluted, and paddy fields could not be cultivated as usual for the soil had been contaminated with impurities due to the garbage recycling process.
