Tax relief benefits to public:

Inland Revenue Dept. closely monitoring situation

As per the instructions given by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Inland Revenue Department is now closely monitoring the situation where tax relief benefits do not reach the public and consumers, Commissioner General of Inland Revenue Nadun Guruge said.Addressing the media yesterday at the Inland Revenue Department, the Commissioner said that a number of tax concessions have been introduced by the government for the benefit of the public in order to boost the country’s economy.

The main aim of the government is to achieve higher economic development through these tax concessions.

“As instructed by the President, the Inland Revenue Department conducted an investigation

where it was revealed that following a number of raids carried out, that some eateries and bakery owners had failed to pass on these benefits to the consumers. At present, we can’t take legal action against them.

Payment by taxpayers is due by January 20. After that we would be able to check whether these tax relief benefits have been passed on to the consumers or not,” the Commissioner said.Responding a query by a journalist, the Commissioner said that the Inland Revenue Commissioner does not have full authority to take legal action in such cases as the power has been vested with the Consumer Affairs Authority. “But, before taking legal action, we hope to make taxpayers aware about this situation and if they continuously cheat the government by defaulting on their tax payments, we will be able to take legal action against them.

We hope to discuss this matter with the Attorney General,” Commissioner General Guruge said.
