Electronic media told to handover press brief tapes

Nugegoda Magistrate Harsha Palpola yesterday issued an order directing three electronic media institutes to handover unedited and edited clips of the video footages of the media briefing held by Attorney Asha Kahawatta, appearing on behalf of MP Ranjan Ramanayake.

The Magistrate made this order pursuant to a request made by Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris. DSG Dileepa Peiris also pointed out that this step was taken to protect the dignity of the judiciary and they would seek the opinion of the Supreme Court regarding Contempt of Court.

“As state officials, judges, investigation officers and others cannot issue statements to the media about ongoing court cases. Other parties have distorted facts and made statements to the media”, DSG Dileepa Peiris told court.
