Nugegoda Magistrate Harsha Pelpola yesterday rejected the request made by MP Ranjan Ramanayake’s lawyers to release him on bail.

Lawyers who appeared for MP Ranjan Ramanayake said Ramanayake was arrested without following proper legal procedure and pleaded that he be released on bail.

His lawyers cited that a warrant against Ramanayake cannot be issued by a Magistrate’s court

The Magistrate rejected Ramanayake’s request citing that court has jurisdiction to issue and recall warrants.

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris raising objections cited the investigation officer handling the case had obtained the warrant after filing a detailed fact report before Chief Magistrate Wasantha Kumara at the his official residence on January 14.

The DSG said the Magistrate has no legal authority to declare the arrest warrant issued by the Chief Magistrate null and avoid. MP Ranjan Ramanayake was ordered to be further remanded till January 29 by the Magistrate. The Magistrate also ordered the police to file the progress report with regard to the investigation on this day.
