Cabinet approves drafting ‘National Intelligence Act’ Bill

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the drafting of a new Bill titled ‘National Intelligence Act’ to regulate and empower all intelligence services, Co-cabinet Spokesman, Information & Communications Technology, Higher Education, Technology & Innovations Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane said.

This was announced during the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department.

Minister Dr.Gunawardane said that the national intelligence services of the country play a pivotal role in correctly predicting possible security threats and taking measures to prevent such threats by making necessary recommendations. “The country’s intelligence activities have been limited due to the absence of sufficient legal provisions to support their missions by regulating and empowering intelligence services,” the Minister said.

Considering this, the Cabinet of Ministers, which met on Tuesday (14), approved the proposal submitted by State Minister of Defence Chamal Rajapaksa calling for the drafting of a Bill to regulate and empower all intelligence services.
