The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) has launched a series of awareness programmes for schoolchildren on the ethical usage of cellular mobile phones and social media.

The programme is to increase children’s awareness of laws, rules and regulations in relation to the ethical usage of mobile phones and social media and to discuss on reported case studies where such ethics have been violated.

The main objective of these interactive sessions would be to minimise issues relating to misuse of mobile phones and social media among the younger generation.

The TRCSL has already held a series of such awareness programmes in schools in Colombo and the suburban areas. The TRCSL looks forward to carrying out the programme across the island.

Explaining further on the programme, the TRCSL media unit said, “The telecommunication sector has been identified as one of the booming industries in the economy. Telephone density has exceeded 100 percent and mobile telephones have become part and parcel of the life of many people. Telephone users sometimes fall into difficult situations due to lack of knowledge of ethical usage. The main objective of this programme is to make them aware of the possible risks involved in the case of mobile telephone use and social media. It is evident that most users lack knowledge of the laws and other related rules and regulations.”
