Ranjan’s nomination at upcoming election in doubt - UNP MP

UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake’s nomination at the upcoming General Elections is doubtful in the wake of controversial voice recordings that had leaked-out, UNP MP Wijayapala Hettiarachchi said.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sirikotha UNP Headquarters yesterday, Hettiarachchi observed that MP Ramanayake would have to clear his name to be eligible to get the nomination from the party.

Responding to a question by a journalist, the MP however said the party would wait till a formal charge sheet is submitted to court in order to proceed with disciplinary inquiry against MP Ramanayake. “MP Ramanayake’s recordings have put the party in trouble, but he also worked hard for the party. We have no question that there should be a disciplinary inquiry, but first the Government should charge him and proceed to the court.

Though a Presidential Commission has been proposed by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa over the matter, we highly doubt whether it would be a reality. The recordings of telephone calls include those with the ministers of the incumbent government and their wives. The Government’s nudity will be revealed if those come out. Even if a Commission is appointed, the report will not be made public for another 10 years or so. The Government is leaking out the recordings only on selected persons whom they want to hunt down,” Hettiarachchi alleged.

He said the undue media publicity on private telephone calls was loathsome and that those humiliated the judiciary. He said that he believes that it was wrong to speak to the judges over court cases.

At the same time, he asked the Government to arrest former Southern Provincial Council Member Major (Retired) Ajith Prasanna for publicly criticizing the court rulings using MP Ramanayake’s telephone call recordings as a cover.
