At the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will post a massive win over the Opposition, Roads and Highways, Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando said.
Minister Fernando expressed these views while addressing a public meeting recently.
He said that the SLPP has been consistently gathering more votes and the majority of voters are showing a strong affinity towards the party.
“The UNP had the opportunity to hold a parliamentary election just after the Presidential Election. But they were unable to resolve their problems. They know that they will be defeated in the election. They did not hold the Provincial Council elections too. They avoided it. They thought they will be able to get rid of defeat by postponing elections. But ultimately they were defeated at the Presidential Election. Most of the UNP voters in rural areas are now supporting the SLPP,” the Minister said.
“Now the UNP is saying that they will support the holding of an election. I heard that Sajith Premadasa has said that they will give all the support needed to get more than a two-thirds majority. If Sajith Premadasa has enough strength to face the election, I propose to hold the election right now. They know they will be defeated in the election. They are fighting for Opposition leadership, party leadership and so on. The UNP has divided into three or four groups now. The Podujana Peramuna is a party which prefers to face elections. We have the majority of votes and we will have a comfortable win in the next election,” Minister Fernando said.
“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a strong leader who is committed to fulfilling the pledges given at the Presidential Election. Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a popular leader. He always represents citizens in fighting issues they face. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is always dedicated to serving the people to achieve what the majority prefers,” the Minister said.
“Sajith Premadasa has no long-term vision and he is the weakest leader appointed by the UNP in recent history. The UNP will be defeated at the election for sure. So who would like to take up leadership in a party which gets defeated continuously? If Ranil Wikremesinghe likes to keep the leadership with him, let him keep it. Let him contest as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the UNP. Now you can understand the limit of knowledge Sajith Premadasa has. If he was able to take the leadership by winning the Presidential Election, then good. But he was defeated at the Presidential Election,” the Minister said.
