The State Engineering Corporation has been awarded the contract to supply 100,000 concrete sleepers for the next 30 months to the Railways Department. The estimated cost of purchasing 100,000 concrete sleepers is Rs 68.76 million.
A Cabinet paper was presented by Passenger Transport Management, Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to award the contract to supply 100,000 concrete sleepers for the next 30 months to the State Engineering Corporation.
The proposal was approved by the Cabinet.
Since the inception of the railway service in Sri Lanka, wooden sleepers have been used mainly for railways.
However, due to the severe shortage of timber in the country, the Railway Department has taken measures to use concrete sleepers as an alternative.
The State Timber Corporation has also been unable to meet the demand for wooden sleepers.
