Several Tamil, Muslim parties hold talks on common alliance?

Several political parties representing the Tamil and Muslim communities have commenced discussions to form a common alliance targeting the upcoming general election, it is reported.

According to sources, those parties include the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) of MP Rauff Hakeem, All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Party of MP Rishad Bathiudeen and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) jointly formed by MPs Mano Ganesan, Palani Digambaran and V. Radhakrishnan.

The discussions were allegedly held subsequent to the decision by the North-based Tamil National Alliance to contest from several districts in the South such as Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha and Kandy at the next Parliamentary election.

Currently, there are 18 Members in Parliament representing the SLMC, ACMC and the TPA.

According to the agreement to be signed, the parties representing the Muslim community will not contest from the Tamil majority areas and vice versa, it is reported.

However, it was reported that a final decision has not been agreed upon among the participants so far.
