Three held for masquerading as anti-corruption officers

The Habarana Police had arrested three suspects who had entered a massage centre in Habarana claiming to be officers of the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit and had abducted two women.

The Habarana Police had commenced an investigation based on a complaint received and had recovered three blue caps with the police logo on them, an identity cover with the police name on it, and a black jeep similar to the ones used by the police.

The suspects are 30, 39 and 56 years of age and are residents of the Kurunegala, Trincomalee and Buttala areas.

Investigations have also revealed that this group had been raiding numerous places on the pretext of being Walana anti-corruption officers and had been misleading people. The three suspects were produced for an identification parade yesterday at the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court.

The Habarana Police are conducting further investigations.

The Police Media Division said that in the event such groups claiming to be members of the Panadura, Walana Anti-Corruption unit raid any establishment and their identities need to be verified, the public could contact the Panadura Walana Anti-Corruption Unit on the telephone number 038 – 2234314.

The public could also notify the anti-corruption unit regarding any information on this group masquerading as anti-corruption officers. All such verifications and complaints could be made to the given telephone number.
