Jobs for 50,000 graduates by March 1

Over 50,000 unemployed graduates, both internal and external, will receive employment by March 1, Education, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said yesterday.

“The degree course is immaterial and there is no requirement to be under 35 either. Six months training will be provided for every graduate with an assurance of employment. Those who were unable to get through the Ordinary Level exam will also be provided with a training period. On the directive of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, a separate institute will be established to look into the vacancies available,” Minister Alahapperuma said.

The Minister was speaking at a press conference held at the SLPP Office in Battaramulla.

“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has already pledged to take the necessary decisions in this regard at the next Cabinet meeting. Graduates were recruited as Samurdhi officers during the previous regime. Buddhist monks were also employed as Samurdhi officers. During our rule, we will not insult religion and therefore, Buddhist monks will be recruited to the teachers’ service without being driven from pillar to post,” the Minister added.

“One thousand schools will be elevated to the status of National schools as promised during the election campaign,” Minister Alahapperuma said.

“There are only 375 National schools in the country at present. There are also 125 Divisional Secretariat divisions which lack National schools. On President Gotabaya Rajapksa instrucyions, a National school will be named in each of these 125 Divisional Secretariat divisions within 90 days. This will increase the number of National schools to 500, and our target is 1000 national schools within the next two years,” he said.

He also added that 274 of the 375 national schools have Acting Principles. “During the last 4 years, the government was unable to look into vacancies and provide employment in a systematic manner. We are ready to take up the responsibility and provide employment despite political differences.”

The Minister also deplored the fact regarding the value of the school uniform vouchers were reduced.

“With profound responsibility, I say that the value of school uniform vouchers have not been reduced. School uniform vouchers are of 12 different price categories, classified according to age groups. As the VAT was reduced from 8%, the students are getting a chance to obtain more cloth materials too.

During the previous regime the voucher consisted pictures of the then President, former Prime Minister and those of the Education Minister and the State Minister.

And by now it has changed into a group image consisting all the religions and nationalities conveying the message of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa; equality.

When questioned by a journalist regarding the decision of increasing the number of students in a classroom to 40 students, the Minister responded that the decision will be put into action if an assistant teacher is provided only.

“The decision taken by the previous government to limit the student number to 35 in primary schools was a good move. We as a Cabinet approved of the decision of increasing the student number on the basis of providing an assistant teacher to the primary classes. Because with the support of an assistant teacher, 40 students could be handled,” he added.
