Plan to make public servants’ salaries, pensions parallel with CoL Index increase

A procedure will be introduced to increase public servants’ salaries and pensions parallel with the increase of the Cost of Living Index, Public Administration and Home Affairs State Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

State Minister Samarasinghe made this observation at a meeting held with pensioners’ trade union members at the Kalutara District Secretariat recently.

Samarasinghe said that presently the government is working on the preliminaries of the said procedure where the salaries and pensions of the government workers will change in relation to the increases in the Cost of Living Index, as proposed in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘Saubhagyaye Idiri Dekma” national policy.

“Presently, there are around 640,000 pensioners in the country. Each year around 25,000 pensioners are added to the total count. The government pays approximately Rs. 19,000 million to pay the pensions to the retired government workers,” Samarasinghe said.

He also said that the government is planning to reorganize the Pensions Department imake its service more efficient.

Samarasinghe also said he will take measures to provide pensioners their pension payment details every six months.
