Sea bath ends in tragedy

Two males and a female student who had gone for a sea bath in Waikkal, died after they were caught in the current and drifted away in the seas off Kammala Beach on Saturday (11).

The deceased are Nadeera Daham Gimsara Tissera (14), Kaveesha Sewmini Chandraratne (17) and Premaratne Tissera (21) of the Singakkuliya and Sandalankawa areas and are said to be relatives.

The girl is a student of Sandalankawa National School and the boy (14) is a student of Dankotuwa Wekada Maha Vidyalaya.

They had been to the Waikkal area and went for a sea bath with a group of friends when the tragedy occurred.

It is reported that the two males had died in an attempt to rescue the 17-year-old female who was drifting. The bodies of the girl and the 14-year-old boy were found with the support of area residents on Saturday while the body of the other youth had washed ashore on the Poruthota Beach in Kochchikade last morning.

Wennappuwa, Dankotuwa and Kochchikade Police are investigating.
