‘Journalists should guide society on right path’

Ampara District Secretary D.M.L.Bandaranayake said journalists should play an important and responsible role in society and guide politicians and department heads providing them with actual information to go ahead with their development process.

He was addressing the journalists at the District Secretariat AI Wickrema Auditorium after opening the Information Department Media Unit at the Ampara District Secretariat on Monday.

“Journalists should not confine to ceremonies and meetings. They must provide constructive suggestions for the development,” he said.

He praised the Ampara journalists’ role and commended their valuable services. “We were well informed by the media of the shortcomings and other events. Ampara is blessed with all three communities and they are living very peacefully. This should be continued,” he said.

He said journalists should inspire the poor in society. He also touched upon cultivation, irrigation, damages sustained by disasters and the losses,

A large number of journalists from all parts of the district were present.

Information Department Director Naalaka Kaluwela detailed the role of the journalists and the latest media culture and how media should be activated in advanced and multi-cultured societies. Deputy Director Kapila Ariyavansa and SLRC Nethra Channel Asst. Director Dr. S. Moses and Duminda Guruge of Dinamina spoke.
