Cabinet memorandum to uplift boat, ship manufacturing sector - Ranatunga

Industrial Exports and Investment Promotions, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said a Cabinet memorandum will be submitted on developing infrastructure facilities required for the boat and ship manufacturing industry in Sri Lanka.

The minister made these remarks during a meeting held with boat and ship manufacturers and investors on Thursday (9).

The boat and ship manufacturers stressed Minister Ranatunga that one of the fundamental problems faced by them is the lack of facilities to test boats after they are manufactured. The other problems include the lack of dry tanks for boat and ship repairing, and access facilities to open the repaired boats out to the sea after repairing.

Of around 20 active boatyards that build boats in Sri Lanka, 10 companies have export capability. The main export destinations for ships and boats are India, the UAE, the Maldives and Singapore. The different types of boats may fall into products such as yachts, pleasure and leisure boats, fishing boats, passenger, sports, rescue, coast guard and patrol boats.
