Minimal delay in university admissions - Dr. Gunawardane

The delay in admission to universities after qualified students are selected will be minimised, Information and Communication Technology, Higher Education, Technology and Innovations Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane said after paying an inspection visit at a higher education institute in Nuwara Eliya.

The minister said when measures are taken to minimise the delay in university admission, the students, who are qualified will be able to enter university in the same year they sat for GCE Advanced Level. According to present practise, students qualified for university entrance have to wait for months after being selected to follow higher education.

“Students who have been selected for universities will not have to wait for months to enter university hereafter,” Minister Dr. Gunawardane said.

In line with this measure, conducting various other selection tests have been banned except for the Z-score of the Advanced Level results for student admission for undergraduate courses. These measures have been taken as certain universities hold selection tests, practical and written tests to enrol students for several undergraduate courses.

The minister said diploma and higher diploma courses will be conducted for students who are not qualified to enter universities.

“When countries such as China are considered, there are cities and areas famous for certain products and technologies. The products of those cities are presented to the international market. Sri Lanka too can adhere to these methodology to boost the higher education opportunities as well as the country’s economy,” the Minister said.
