Karunyan pilots Lyceum to victory

A splendid unbeaten chanceless 113 runs by the captain and the gloveman of the side and opening batsman Karunyan Ponkowan piloted his alma mater Lyceum International School, Nugegoda to defeat formidable Zahira College, Colombo by innings and 75 runs in their inter school under 13 division three tournament cricket match worked off at Wattala By virtue of this victory Nugegoda Lyceum has qualified for the third round.

Karunyan who bats right hand hit eighteen fours and three sixes and occupied the crease for 95 minutes and faced 76 balls.

Also he was involved in an unbroken opening stand of 164 runs with Thanuk de Silva who contributed an unbeaten 33 runs. This is his second century in this tournament and so far he has collected 253 runs in six innings being unbeaten twice. His average is 63.3 Lyceum is coached by Chamara Guruge.

Batting first Zahirians were shot out for a paltry 32 runs with a superb spell of bowling by Aritha Wimalaraj who claimed 4 for no runs and in reply Lyceum declared at 164 for no loss and in their second essay visitors were bowled out for 57 runs.

Lyceum I.S. - 164/0 in 20 overs – (Karunyan Ponkowan 113 n/o, Thanuk de Silva 33 n/o).

In the earlier game they beat Mayadunne Maha Vidyalaya on first innings by 53 runs at Hanwella.

Lyceum International School – 117 in 47 overs – (Thanuk de Silva 30, Udana Eranga 3/20, Sahan Sulochana 2/24 and 70/4 – Sethika Balasuriya 22, Thanuk de Silva 22, Udara Eranga 2/32).

Mayadunne MV – 64 in 23.3 overs – (Dinith Kumara 20, Charuka Amarasekera 5/20, Hiruka Kodithuwakku 2/7, Abdul Hakam 2/14).
