‘A house for every village, future to the country’

In an effort to usher the new year with a people centric approach, the Government has devised its first community development programme of offering free homes to destitute families in each of the 14,022 Gramasevaka Divisions,” Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet briefing, he said that the Ministry of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing facilities has received Cabinet sanction for an accelerated plan to offer free homes to destitute families in each of the 14,022 Gramasevaka Divisions across the country.

“The project is in keeping with the policy plan of ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ which plans to uplift the livelihood of some of the most destitute families with new homes and means of incomes,” Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Bandula Gunawardena told the media at the Information Department. The programme which is scheduled to come into effect from this month, was proposed jointly by both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing facilities, where construction will begin with the donation of Rs. 600,000 for either construction or enhancement of a house of a selected family subject to the priority of the Grama Niladhari Division as the first phase of the programme.

Further to this project, State Minister of Defence Chamal Rajapaksa has also put forth a proposal which will see individuals from destitute and poverty afflicted families who are of working age and in good health being given a six month training so that they may be employable.

Dr Gunawardena further said that these individuals will be appointed as welfare officers within the respective Grama Sevaka divisions.
