Maintain dignity when arresting MPs - Speaker tells police

Government and Opposition MPs have informed police and the Defence Ministry that arresting an MP should be done in a manner which would not impair the honour and dignity of a parliamentarian.

Instructions were given at a meeting Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had with government and Opposition MPs at the parliament complex held yesterday. The MPs informed police and Defence Ministry officials that if a member of any political party had committed an offence, the MP should be duly arrested. However, the MPs informed that a proper mechanism should be put in place and the police officers should be issued proper guidelines in this regard.

Government Ministers including State Defence Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, state ministers and ministers including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe were present at the meeting. Acting Inspector General C.D Wickremaratne, Ministry officials including Defence Secretary Major General Kamal Gunaratne and senior police officers were also present.

The MPs highlighted that the arrest of a MP should be done in a manner that does not damage the dignity of the MP as well as the dignity of the police officer making the arrest. MPs pointed out that a Member of Parliament can also be summoned to the police prior to an arrest.It was a decided that the Speaker will discuss these concerns with the Security Forces and will take necessary action regarding the matter.
