‘Ranjan has made a mockery of Parliament’

The Legislature has become a “house of comedy” and a mockery from the day people elected persons like Ranjan Ramanayake to this august assembly, Yuktiyata Handak’s (Voice for Justice) Secretary Lalith Piyum Perera has said.

He was speaking at a media conference at the Western Province Fine Arts house in Colombo on Wednesday (8).

Perera said January 8 was an unforgettable day. It was on this day five years ago that political revenge and victimisation started in earnest in this country. He would not say that political victimisation did not exist prior to that. But it was on that day five years ago that people elected a government which started the most virulent form of revenge and victimisation by manipulating politics.

Perera said this was one reason that his organisation always insisted that Gotabaya Rajapaksa became President. The only thing the yahapalana government did correctly during the last five years was political victimisation and taking revenge.

He said before two months has lapsed after Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s victory, the yahapalana government had been stripped naked. Yuktiyata Handak was the leading organisation which campaigned against political revenge and victimisation for the last five years. Therefore it had the right to prevail upon the government to correct the injustices caused by the previous regime.

He said the revelations made by Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayaka’s audio tapes showed the extent to which the Legislature of this country had been belittled.
