‘Social media circulating false message about new type of flu’

Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe denounced as fabricated the message circulating on social media purported to be a notice from the Health Ministry about an outbreak of influenza caused by an unidentified new virus in Sri Lanka,.

“No such message has been issued by the Health Ministry. The public should not panic because there is no outbreak of influenza caused by an unidentified new virus,” he said.

Dr. Jasinghe clarified that the influenza that occurs at present is the usual seasonal influenza that occurs at this time every year.

A fewer number of influenza patients were reported in December when compared with the number reported in November. This seasonal flu condition can even go away without medication for some people, he said.

Persons in high-risk categories such as older people (above 65 years) or very young children (below two years), pregnant women, lactating mothers, people with suppressed immunity and those with chronic diabetes, chronic obstructive airways, heart, liver, kidney and metabolic diseases and persons who recently underwent major surgery should seek medical treatment for influenza from a qualified doctor, because their health conditions can worsen due to the seasonal influenza.

Others should also seek medical treatment immediately if they feel very sick or develop difficulty in breathing.

If the people in high-risk categories avoid crowded places during this season, the disease can be controlled more effectively, Dr. Jasinghe added.
