Thihagoda compost-manufacturing project successful

The compost-manufacturing project initiated in the Thihagoda Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) area has

made noticeable progress, PS Chairman Nirmal Samarasinghe said.

According to him, the project has been started at Maharawalauwawatte off the Sabha

premises. Garbage, waste and hard waste collected in Thihagoda and Yatiyana main towns, sub towns and villages in the division are recycled and converted into organic manure at this site.

Members attached to cultivation development committees said the Thihagoda Divisional

Secretariat area is mainly an agricultural region. “Paddy and other agricultural crop cultivations have been the mainstay of the villagers’ economy. Therefore, most of these village folk prefer the use of organic manure instead of chemical fertilizers,” farmers said.

“This garbage-recycling venture has also extended a tremendous boost to the protection of environment in this zone,” Thihagoda PS Chairman Samarasinghe said. “It has also created several direct and indirect employment opportunities for the unemployed youth in the locality.”

“The Southern Provincial Council and the Thihagoda Pradeshiya Sabha have jointly funded the

programme. Environmental preservation and encouragement of cultivators to use compost manure instead of chemical fertilizers in their cultivations would be the main objectives of this project,” the PS Chairman added.
