State Ministers request CIABOC to expedite probe into complaints

A group of State Ministers yesterday went to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABOC) to request to expedite investigations into 13 complaints lodged by them when they were in the Opposition against the members of the then Government.

They pointed out that the CIABOC’s progress on the investigations into the complaints had been sluggish despite several reminders and inquiries over the past four years.

Development Banking and Loan Schemes State Minister Shehan Semasinghe, speaking to the media after visiting the CIABOC, said these complaints lodged since 2016 were mainly against former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and former Ministers Malik Samarawickrama, Kabir Hashim, Ravi Karunanayake, Rishad Bathiudeen, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Thalatha Athukorala and P.Harrison.

Power State Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said the complaints lodged since 2016 were related to swindling and misuse of public property to the tune of Rs.1,500 billion. However, he noted that they do not intend to take the law into their hands and control the Independent Commissions using the ruling power unlike the previous Government.

He said they request the CIABOC to justly investigate the complaints preserving the spirit of an Independent Commission. He warned that if not they would go before the Supreme Court.

Water Supply Facilities State Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said the CIABOC officers undertook to inform them about the date as to when these complaints would be taken up.
