Migratory bird numbers in Bundala Park on the decline

Migratory bird numbers at the Bundala National Park are dwindling as more and more tuskers are invading their territories, residents in the area said.

This has also led to the decline of the number of bird-watchers frequenting the area and hence, the income generated at the park through it has dropped as well, they added. When queried about the issue, Southern Province Assistant Wildlife Director Prasanna Wimaladasa said that the flowing of excess water from the Malala Aara to the Bundala Lagoon was the main reason behind the decline of bird numbers at the park as the excess water was attracting elephants, who scare them off.
