Former PM gave Ranjan consent to kill me - Minister

Says recording leaked on social media:

A recorded phone conversation between former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake has been leaked on social media where the Prime Minister is giving his consent to Ramanayake to go ahead with the assassination of current Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage,it was revealed in parliament yesterday.

Raising a privilege issue Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said, “In the leaked telephone conversation circulating on social media, Ranjan Ramanayake is clearly seeking the blessings of former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to assassinate me. The Prime Minister also gives his approval for this sinister plot. This is a very grave situation where a prime minister and deputy minister is plotting to assassinate an opposition MP.”

He brought up the issue where Ranjan Ramanayake was found practicing his shooting capabilities at the MP’s official residence,Madiwela in 2016 and MP Udaya Padmakumara raised a privilege issue in parliament regarding this matter.

Reading out the response given in parliament by the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Aluthgamage said he was practicing his shooting. “In the recording of their conversation, the Prime Minister advices Ramanayake to tell the police that while practicing he had accidently shot me. It is the Prime Minister who is telling his Deputy Minister how to get away by claiming that it was a mistake. Ramanayake is heard telling the Prime Minister that the former IGP had saved him based on the intervention of PM Wickremesinghe. What is the meaning of this situation Mr. Speaker? We have spoken up regarding the Bond scam in Parliament as Opposition MPs. We also raised corruption charges of the then government, as this is the right of an Opposition MP. However, what is the plight of MPs in parliament if the Prime Minister is conniving with a deputy minister to assassinate MPs and is giving them his blessings to commit such horrendous acts? This is a pathetic plight.”

He said that such foolish acts were expected of someone like Ranjan Ramanayake. But, this was the country’s Prime Minister who is heard plotting the assassination of an Opposition MP and encouraging him to carry out this crime. “Ranjan Ramanayake is known to do any foolish act to gain public attention. But, it is totally unacceptable for the Prime Minister to be encouraging and plotting such crimes. In fact he has given instructions to Ranjan Ramanayake to assassinate me. It is clearly stated in the telephone recording. He says to Ramanayake that this cannot be done without silencing opposition MPs. What is the meaning of this?”

He also told parliament that he would be lodging a complaint with the police today (8), but said that they could only complain to the Speaker about the plight faced by MPs in parliament as he is the head of this esteemed establishment. He said while he has the right and ability to go to the police or the CID, as members of the country’s most prestigious institution, he felt it was most appropriate to raise this issue in parliament first. “When the opposition is raising their voice against corruption of the government, they are trying to shut us up by killing us. What is the meaning of this? Is this what is expected of the Prime Minister?”

Therefore, he called on the new Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to make a statement regarding this issue. “As the former Prime Minister is not in parliament today, at least as the new Opposition Leader you should make a statement as to what action your party is going to take against such MPs. There are 121,000 recordings of Ranjan Ramanayake. Only five have been released so far.

These recordings contain telephone conversations with judges, CID officers and FCID etc.Former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha said at the time he resigned that the IGP and FCID were summoned to Temple Trees and with Ranjan Ramanayake and Ajith Perera in attendance and wanted him to mediate.

The people of this country are of the view that Ranjan Ramanayake is a fool. But the Prime Minister has been using him to commit these crimes,” he added.

Aluthgamage said that the whole Opposition should be held responsible for this incident. “All of you who were members of the previous Cabinet should take responsibility for this incident. All of you knew what was happening. You were all conniving together during meetings at Temple Trees to target Opposition MPs.”

Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage asked the Speaker to focus his attention on this matter and take appropriate action.
