Ranjan’s telephone conspiracies:

Former CID Director Shani interdicted

Former CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekara has been interdicted on the directive of the National Police Commission (NPC).

He has reportedly been interdicted pending an inquiry into the recordings of phone conversations between the former CID Director and former State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake.

The Police Media Division in a statement said that Abeysekera has been transferred to the Police headquarters and interdicted for bringing the Sri Lanka Police service into disrepute by engaging in irregular telephone conversations.

The release said that acting IGP C.D.Wickremaratne has been directed to conduct a preliminary investigation regarding the conduct of Abeysekera on the basis of details found in audio clips seized from Ranjan Ramanayake’s residence recently and report to the Commission within two weeks.

According to these audio chips there had been a conspiracy to arrest former Opposition politicians and imprison them to satisfy personal agendas for which several CID officers including Shani Abeysekara were allegedly involved, a high official at police headquarters said.

He said according to those audio clips there had been personal involvement of certain persons to get former parliamentarian Duminda Silva condemned to gallows.

Although the Western Province Crimes Division conducted initial investigations into these audio clips, the acting IGP took action to hand them over to the Colombo Crimes Division for a thorouugh investigation since the Western Province Crimes Division did not have sophisticated equipment to do so, he added.

He said the audio clips contained conversations Ramanayake had with a female judge pertaining to the Duminda Silva case.Since this Judge is on retirement, police headquarters would shortly inform the Justice Ministry and the Judicial Services Commission about the matter.
