In light of Ranjan’s telephone conversations with former HC Judge and ex-CID Director:

Former MP Duminda Silva’s imprisonment could have been politically motivated - State Minister

Since the audio tapes of conversations between then State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake and former High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka and former CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekara revealed that the imprisonment of former MP Duminda Silva could have been politically motivated, we urge the MP’ Silva’s family to request the Chief Justice to reconvene this case in order to mete out justice to former MP Silva, Mahaweli Development State Minister Roshan Ranasinghe said yesterday.

The State Minister was addressing a media briefing at Temple Trees, he said the audio records show that Duminda Silva has been imprisoned purely for reasons of malice and revenge. He has been in jail for four years. When you analyze the verdict, one judge has acquitted all the suspects while Judge Padmini Ranawaka has given the death sentence. In the light of the telephone conversations with Ranawaka and Abeysekara, now there is doubt whether that judgement was politically influenced in order to get promotions in their careers.

During the past four and a half years, all the institutions connected to the Judiciary system became a cat’s-paw of the wily politicians who handled them to suit their petty political agendas. This has resulted in these institutions losing credibility,” he added.

“Shani Abeysekara’s pleadings to Ranjan Ramanayake have brought the entire CID into disrepute. According to the evidence given by former Solicitor General Suhada Gamlath, the Attorney General’s Department was also highly politically influenced”.

“When, Ranjan Ramanayake said the Judiciary was corrupt during the previous regime, we do not know whether he had an audio tape of Judge Padmini Ranawaka at that time. In world rankings, Sri Lanka was in 40th position based on the independence and the freedom of the Judiciary before 2015. But, now dropped to 70th position,” he said.

He said that only a few audio tapes were found so far and if we were able to recover more tapes, we can get to know how the previous government acted in such a revengeful in the last four and a half years.

He also said it is not morally right for the UNP which was rejected by the people to further remain in Parliament. But, the UNP is scared of going for a General Election right now due to its failure at the former Presidential election. However, We must go for a General election as soon as possible to establish a strong government for the betterment of the country and its people.
