Forest cover to be expanded in 5 years - Dr. Herath

Peradeniya University Senior Lecturer Dr. Charitha Herath said the main objective of the national tree planting campaign is to plant one million trees across the country according to the environment policy outlined in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s election manifesto in order to increase the forest cover of the country from 29 percent to 32 percent within the next five years.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the ‘Hadena Ratata - Wedena Gasak’ (Growing Tree for Developing Country) tree planting campaign by planting a Mee sapling at the Bauddhaloka Pirivena premises in Kurunegala on January 2.

This programme was implemented parallel to the national tree-planting campaign.

Dr. Herath said Mee is an endemic tree and its oil is rich in medicinal value. “About three decades ago, we were able to see these trees in almost all home gardens. But, now we can see them very rarely. We have planned to plant 10,000 Mee saplings in temple premises, school premises and tank bunds before the next General Election. We must not forget that trees are an integral part of our environment,” he added.

He said required saplings would be provided by the Forest Conservation Department.

Dr. Wasantha Bandara, the National Organizer of the Desha Hithaishe Jathika Viyaparaya participated.
