The main objective of the ‘Sapiri Gamak’ programme is bridging the gap that exists between the development of urban areas and that of rural areas. Economic and Policy Development State Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne said.

“The previous UNP regime carpeted private roads misusing the people’s taxes. Although the previous UNP regime carpeted private roads used by private homeowners, this Government implements development projects only after receiving the approval of the village development committees,” he said.

The State Minister was speaking at a programme to educate politicians and officials on the ‘Sapiri Gamak’ programme.

He pointed out that the Government is granting Rs. 2 million for every grama niladhari division in the first quarter of this year for village development, under this programme.

State Minister Seneviratne instructed the participants not to select development projects that have legal issues or which would need a prolonged period or a large amount of money because the Government is offering Rs. 2 million for each quarter of the year.
